Apparel sales drive growth for JD Sports amidst footwear weakness
UK-based sports fashion retailer JD Sports Fashion plc (JD Group) has published its financial results for the 26 weeks ended August 1, 2026, revealing a 74.6 percent surge in statutory profit before tax to 241 million pounds (321 million dollars). The group’s statutory performance was bolstered by a significant reduction in adjusting items, which fell to 41 million pounds from 213 million pounds in the prior period.
Despite the growth in statutory bottom-line performance, profit before tax and adjusting items declined 19.7 percent on a reported basis to 282 million pounds, down 18.7 percent at constant exchange rates. Total group revenue dipped 0.8 percent at constant exchange rates and 0.7 percent on a reported basis to 5.90 billion pounds.
Operating profit before adjusting items and after interest on lease liabilities dropped 20.5 percent on a reported currency basis to 294 million pounds.
Chief executive officer Régis Schultz highlighted that trading was impacted by "consumer cost-of-living pressures, footwear product cycle headwinds and a highly promotional market".
Apparel expansion offsets footwear softness
Organic sales fell 0.7 percent across the group, incorporating a 2.1 percentage point contribution from net new retail space offset by a like-for-like (LFL) sales drop of 2.8 percent.
Categorically, apparel and accessories outperformed footwear, rising approximately 4 percent YoY on an organic basis to represent 36 percent of group sales. Footwear sales dropped roughly 3 percent YoY, constrained by product cycle transitions across key global brand partners. Digital operations continued to expand, with organic online sales rising 5.2 percent YoY, pushing e-commerce to 20 percent of total group sales.
Gross margin contracted by 20 basis points to 46.8 percent, driven by controlled price investments of approximately 50 basis points net, primarily across online channels, to maintain consumer engagement in a discounted trading environment.
Regional performance reflects varied market conditions
Performance across JD Group’s core geographic territories varied throughout the 26-week period. North America revenue fell 3.7 percent on a reported basis to 2.23 billion pounds, while organic sales declined 1.7 percent. Slower demand for high-heat footwear product in the second quarter weighed on complementary fascias, though apparel sales grew roughly 2 percent organically.
Revenues in Europe reached 1.95 billion pounds, representing an organic sales decline of 0.5 percent. Strength in the Iberian and Greek sporting goods businesses helped balance softer trading for the main JD fascia.
UK revenue contracted 1.8 percent on a reported basis to 1.44 billion pounds, with organic sales down 1.6 percent. Strong replica football kit demand during the summer supported apparel sales, offsetting persistent weakness in footwear.
Asia Pacific region delivered double-digit expansion, with revenue up 17.3 percent on a reported basis to 278 million pounds and organic sales climbing 10.7 percent.
Portfolio optimisation and outlook
JD Group actively executed portfolio optimisation measures during the half-year.
The group completed the restructuring of its JD Germany operations, reducing its store count from 91 to 62 locations. In Eastern Europe, the group initiated a reorganisation to transition over 40 stores across six markets to partner Sport Vision under a franchise model. Furthermore, the company signed a franchise agreement with Mexican distributor Grupo Axo to open more than 140 JD stores in Mexico starting in 2027. As of August 1, 2026, JD Group operated 4,766 stores worldwide.
The board declared an interim dividend of 0.40 pence per share, up 21.2 percent year-over-year.
Management reiterated its full-year guidance for fiscal 2027, expecting profit before tax and adjusting items between 700 million pounds and 800 million pounds, alongside free cash flow of 460 million pounds to 520 million pounds.
