Independent menswear retailer Wellgosh has announced it is closing down after 35 years in business.

The news comes after Wellgosh was snapped up by British sportswear giant JD Sports for an undisclosed sum in January 2021.

The family-run business posted in an Instagram post: “It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the closing down of Wellgosh.

“For over 35 years, Leicester has been the beating heart of our brand and we are grateful to our store teams and the dedicated community that we have created.”

Wellgosh was founded in Leicester in 1988 by Pete Turner who opened the first store in Silver Arcade. Since then, the company has opened stores in Birmingham and Nottingham.

The retailer said on social media that its website and stores will “close shortly”.
