Gordon Brothers reportedly mulling sale of Poundland

Poundland owner Gordon Brothers is reportedly exploring a potential sale of the UK discount retailer just over a year after acquiring the business.

According to Sky News, the US firm, known to be specialised in turnarounds, is understood to be in talks with advisers about launching an auction process, with advisers potentially being appointed within days. No final decision has been made.

The possibility of another ownership change has raised further questions over the future of Poundland, which currently operates around 600 stores and employs approximately 12,000 people. Sky News stated that potential bidders could include other turnaround investors, private equity firms or industry players.

Gordon Brothers acquired Poundland from Pepco Group in July 2025 for one pound, following a period of financial difficulty. The deal was followed by a court-sanctioned restructuring that resulted in the closure of up to 200 stores.

Since then, the business has begun to stablise, with Poundland managing director Barry Williams stating in January that the retailer was “on the right track”, while highlighting plans to focus on lower prices, a sharper product offer and greater price simplicity across clothing, homewares and grocery.

The media outlet said Gordon Brothers, which also owns fashion brands LK Bennett and Radley, is yet to comment on the potential sale, while Poundland declined to comment.
