Leather Working Group (LWG) has said it will be launching the first phase of its LWG Chain of Custody Project at its upcoming Member Conference on September 22.

The initiative will address the need for trusted labels and verification on products that make green claims and aims to provide transparency in the leather supply chain.

In collaboration with 3P Strategy, LWG’s project will see the creation of how to develop and execute this information, while following a delivery plan designed specifically for the leather industry.

In order to establish the initiative, a group of industry experts will come together under LWG to discuss the matter and define how to support verified product claims.

In a release, the head of LWG, Christina Trautmann, said: “Being able to make verified sustainability claims, supported by evidence, is a critical priority.

“This initiative will support LWG’s mission to create a foundation for showcasing sustainable leather products. We are calling on industry stakeholders to embrace this initiative by working with us to build transparency and trust in leather as sustainable material.”
