Poundland owner reportedly launches sale process just year after takeover

Poundland’s owner Gordon Brothers has reportedly launched a formal sale process for the budget retailer and is accelerating the search ahead of the Christmas trading period, a report by Sky News has suggested.

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), which was appointed by Gordon Brothers in August, is said to have begun contact prospective buyers, with initial bids due in early October. The firm is understood to be targeting a completed sale by the end of October, just weeks before the key festive trading period.

The potential ownership change comes just over a year after Gordon Brothers acquired Poundland from Pepco Group for one euro in July 2025, following a period of significant financial difficulty. A court-approved restructuring ultimately led to the closure of roughly 200 stores.

Poundland, which now operates around 600 UK stores and employs approximately 12,000 people, is said to have stabilised financially and is now profitable at an EBITDA level, Sky News reported.

Alongside the broader restructuring, the retailer has also been reshaping its fashion proposition. In January 2026, Poundland completed its store consolidation programme and brought its Pep&Co clothing operation back in-house, with a greater focus on womenswear, expanded sizing and products priced below 10 pounds. The business also relaunched children’s and baby ranges during the first quarter.

Sky News said Modella Capital, owner of TGJones, Hobbycraft and Poundland’s former sister chain Dealz, is among the potential bidders, although no buyer has committed to the process.
