Selfridges returns to profitability, revenues increase 7 percent

UK department store operator Selfridges Retail Limited (Selfridges) has reported a 7 percent increase in revenue to 830.8 million pounds (1,099 million dollars) for the 52-week period ended January 3, 2026, compared to 774.6 million pounds in the prior 48-week period ended January 4, 2025. Total revenue, including sales from brand partners, reached 1.6 billion pounds.

Gross profit for the financial year reached 411.3 million pounds. Operating profit rose 89 percent to 79.7 million pounds, up from 42.2 million pounds in the previous period. Margin improvement and cost management contributed to the performance.

Profit before tax stood at 13 million pounds, compared to a loss before tax of 15.9 million pounds in the prior period. Post-tax profit for the period rose to 23.9 million pounds from 1.8 million pounds in the comparative period.

Physical store performance drives growth

Footfall across the four UK physical stores increased by 7 percent during the year. The group stated that trading reflected a focus on higher-margin transactions.

Selfridges Group chief executive officer André Maeder attributed the results to customer engagement initiatives, including the Selfridges Unlocked membership programme. Maeder noted that trading conditions remained challenging due to the macroeconomic environment and policy decisions, citing the abolition of tax-free shopping for international visitors.

Capital expenditure during the period included investments in retail spaces across London, Birmingham, and Manchester, as well as digital platforms. The company ended the financial period with cash and cash equivalents of 166.3 million pounds, representing an increase of 22.9 million pounds.

Ownership structure and property portfolio changes

During the financial year, ultimate parent entity Cambridge Retail Group Holding Limited (Cambridge Retail Group) completed a corporate restructuring on November 6, 2025. Selfridges acquired the share capital of London Oxford Street Holding Limited and Manchester Exchange Square Holding Limited from Cambridge Properties for a total consideration of 1.37 billion pounds.

The acquisition brought the property lease interests for the flagship London Oxford Street store and the Manchester Exchange Square store under the direct ownership of the operating subsidiary.

As part of the wider group structure, Cambridge Retail Group reported consolidated revenue of 1.54 billion pounds and an overall loss before tax of 31.2 million pounds for the 52-week period.
