A detailed look at Lefties' UK market entry

Madrid – The opening of the first UK store for Lefties, Inditex's family fashion chain, has undoubtedly been among the top retail news stories of the last few days of August. The chain began its entry into this new market at the end of July. It aims to expand to three operational stores by the end of this year.

Following up on information previously reported by FashionUnited at the end of last week, the first Lefties store in the UK opened on Thursday, August 27. This followed rumours that began circulating in September of last year. By early March 2026, Inditex confirmed its plans to introduce Lefties into the British market during this year, coinciding with the presentation of its 2025 annual results. This entry was planned to coincide with its return to France, which was confirmed during the Annual General Meeting in July 2025. It was also announced that a total of three stores would open during the year.

Based on these guidelines and objectives, Lefties began its foray into the British market at the end of last July with the launch of its online platform and mobile app in the UK. This initial channel started the commercialisation of its “family” offering on British soil. Building on its omnichannel model, this was reinforced with the inauguration of the first Lefties store in the UK on August 27, located in the Liverpool One shopping centre in Liverpool. This is the first of three stores planned by the chain in the country. It is the result of a determined commitment to internationalisation that will also allow Lefties to strengthen its position against some of its main competitors, particularly Primark.

“Following the recent opening of our store in France, we are continuing our selective international expansion,” said Xavier Ruz Riera, managing director of Lefties, in a statement shared by the fashion chain's management. “As one of the world's leading fashion retail markets, the UK is a natural next step and a very exciting destination for our brand. We believe there is a great opportunity to bring our proposition to British customers, offering quality fashion and home collections for the whole family at accessible prices, through a seamless shopping experience both in-store and online. Our large-format stores bring together collections for the whole family in one space, complemented by innovative technologies—such as automated garment management and assisted checkouts—designed to make the shopping experience convenient and enjoyable. We are looking forward to introducing our brand to British customers, hearing their feedback and continuing to improve both the customer and employee experience as we grow in the UK.”

With over 2,500 square metres of retail space

Now operational in Liverpool One, this first Lefties store in the UK spans over 2,500 square metres of retail space. In this sales area, the chain has already begun marketing its full range of products for the Woman, Man, Teen, Girl, Boy, Baby and Newborn fashion categories, as well as home. This new vertical for Lefties, launched in May 2025, brings together its growing offering of textiles, decorative products, fragrances and homeware.

For its launch, the chain has implemented its new store concept as the basis for this first Lefties store in the UK. This concept was first presented in Madrid in 2025 following the latest rebranding process completed by the Inditex “family” brand, with the opening of the Lefties store in the Westfield Parquesur shopping centre. This point-of-sale model is characterised by open and fluid interiors built on a neutral colour base. This allows the unique features of the chain's commercial offering to be highlighted to customers and enables the feel of the space to be refreshed with each new collection. The atmosphere is therefore fluid and versatile. In retrospect, it is reminiscent of the style Zara has been implementing since early 2022. However, Zara has since distanced itself with its own focus on increasingly elevated, dramatic and sensory spaces, as demonstrated by its flagship store on Serrano street in Madrid.

Beyond this spatial design, the store implements various technological solutions specifically designed to optimise both the customer experience and internal store operations. Lefties highlights features such as the “EasyGo” self-checkout tills, “smart” fitting rooms designed to improve access flow to that specific area of the store, and a free in-store delivery and returns service for online orders. Regarding internal dynamics, the store features a robotic arm for hangers and an automated garment sorting system installed in the back-of-house areas. These technologies are also intended to enhance the customer's shopping experience. For the opening, this experience has been enriched with a coffee pop-up offering free drinks, a temporary photo booth, and the launch of a campaign to build ties with the local community, starring British model and presenter Leomie Anderson and featuring the Lefties denim collection.

And two more UK stores for 2026

Following this first store in Liverpool One, Inditex and Lefties are maintaining their objectives to continue expanding their commercial footprint in the country, with two more stores scheduled to open in the UK in 2026. The chain plans to end the year with operational stores in Liverpool at the Liverpool One shopping centre; in Essex at the Lakeside Shopping Centre; and in Gateshead, near Newcastle, at the Metrocentre. With these three openings, Lefties estimates it will create more than 400 direct jobs in the UK.

Beyond the UK, Lefties' main planned activities for this year include ending the financial year with a total of two stores in France and also entering Germany. This new market for the chain was confirmed during the last 2026 Annual General Meeting. These openings will in any case complete the commercial network of 215 stores across 18 markets with which Lefties closed the 2025 financial year, after opening six new points of sale throughout the year.

In summary
  • Lefties, Inditex's “family” fashion chain, has opened its first store in the UK, located in the Liverpool One shopping centre, as part of its international expansion strategy.
  • The store, which spans over 2,500 square metres, offers a wide range of fashion for the whole family and home products, incorporating the latest store concept with fluid interiors and innovative technologies to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Lefties plans to open two additional stores in the UK before the end of 2026, in Essex and Gateshead. With these three points of sale in total, they estimate they will create over 400 direct jobs in the UK, while continuing with their expansion plans in other international markets such as France and Germany.
