John Lewis opens Christmas shop as consumer appetite for nostalgia drives early trading

UK department store group John Lewis has officially launched its in-store Christmas shop across the country. Opening a little over 13 weeks ahead of the festive season, the physical pop-up destinations follow an early online roll-out as the retailer moves to capitalize on rising consumer demand across core seasonal categories.

Early trading indicators point to high customer engagement. According to internal company data, search volumes for gift tags have increased by 50 percent, tableware by 25 percent, and stockings by 50 percent. Wrapping paper remains a key driver for early sales, with themed designs featuring the Gruffalo performing strongly.

John Lewis head of Christmas Cydney Ball commented: “After months of planning, creating and bringing our vision to life, it’s incredibly exciting to finally open the doors to our Christmas shop and share it with our customers. Christmas at John Lewis is about so much more than finding the perfect gift or ornament for the tree. It’s about the anticipation, the nostalgia and those little moments that make the season feel magical.”

Nostalgia and kidulting drive product strategy

The retailer’s commercial assortment strongly reflects a shift among Millennial and Gen Z demographics toward analogue lifestyle products and nostalgia-driven items. Sales of vinyl records have grown by 98 percent, prompting the addition of 17 new vinyl lines. Retrotech offerings have also seen sharp uplifts; sales of the Native Union Pop Phone recorded a 186 percent spike in the past week alone. The festive assortment includes retro-themed tree ornaments such as 1970s disco mice, cassette tapes, and miniature arcade games.

In tandem with nostalgic tech and decor, John Lewis is leaning into the ‘kidulting’ category by introducing nostalgic licensed characters including Miffy and Snoopy. To build on the momentum of plush accessories and handbag charms, the business has unveiled a collectable collection of yeti ornaments. Designed as dual-purpose items, these plush pieces double as festive tree decorations and year-round bag charms.

Sustainable product development

Sustainability initiatives continue to inform the retailer's seasonal manufacturing choices. All paper products and Christmas crackers are plastic-free, fully recyclable, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. Glitter has been eliminated across all wrapping paper and ornament lines.

From a supply chain perspective, premium pre-lit trees in the collection are manufactured in facilities powered entirely by solar energy, while the retailer's tinsel product line is produced in Wales to minimize logistics-related carbon emissions.
