Muji expands Canadian presence with first Vancouver Island location

Japanese retailer Muji is expanding its footprint in Canada with the opening of its first store on Vancouver Island. Located inside the Mayfair Shopping Centre in Victoria, British Columbia, the new outpost marks the retailer's fifth location in the province and its third Canadian store opening within the past year.

The 3,379-square-foot retail unit features the brand’s classic marketplace design layout intended for streamlined customer navigation. The store carries Muji’s full collection of product categories, including basic apparel, home and kitchen goods, stationery, and travel accessories. The grand opening weekend is scheduled for October 24, 2026 and October 25, 2026.

Coinciding with the expansion, the retailer is launching the Muji Community Collective, a new localized engagement framework. Evolving from the company's global Community Marketplace pop-up series, the initiative adapts traditional store opening strategies by incorporating local businesses and organizations directly into launch campaigns and ongoing retail operations. Ahead of the Victoria opening, residents were invited to nominate regional businesses to participate in launch activities and cross-promotional initiatives.

“Muji is rooted in our Japanese heritage of simplicity, quality, thoughtful design, and products that make everyday life better,” said Richard Rappaport, president of Muji North America. “As we continue to grow in Canada, we are excited to bring that philosophy to more customers while building meaningful connections with the communities we serve. Victoria is an important next step in that journey.”

Rappaport added that as Muji expands its Canadian retail presence, the brand intends to remain aligned with its core ethos while tailoring physical storefronts to resonate with regional markets. The community-focused retail model will serve as a template for future store openings across the country.
