Coffee brand Nespresso is teaming up with zero-waste fashion start-up Zèta to create Re:Ground, a sneaker made using recycled coffee grounds.
The limited-edition Re:Ground capsule collection features sneakers made from 80 percent recycled and reclaimed materials, including Nespresso coffee grounds. Each pair contains 12 cups’ worth of coffee grounds from Nespresso’s capsule recycling scheme, which have been integrated into the vegan leather uppers as well as the soles of the shoes.
Zèta worked with Tintex, its fabric manufacturer, to create the innovative coffee faux leather, and has created the sneakers in three shades, latte, cappuccino and ristretto.
The capsule collection is made in a family workshop in Portugal and is available until June 10, priced 155 euros, and only to customers in Europe to “maintain a short product circuit”.

Laure Babin, chief executive of Zèta, said in a statement: “My vision for Zèta was to create stylish sneakers for eco-conscious fashion lovers. For this capsule collection, our fabric creators at Tintex spent eight months perfecting an innovative vegan faux leather made using recycled coffee grounds.
“Re:Ground is the embodiment of our collaboration with Nespresso – a chic and stylish shoe that celebrates the value of coffee and the virtue of circularity.”
Nespresso chief executive, Guillaume Le Cunff, added: “Zèta is an incredible start-up that brings together style and sustainability. The brand’s commitment to circularity means they are pushing the envelope in terms of creating new value from waste, and their spirit of innovation has led them to design a whole new use for our recycled coffee grounds. Zèta’s Re:Ground capsule collection is sure to delight coffee and fashion fans alike.”
Zèta was founded in September 2020, following a successful crowdfunding campaign, to promote zero-waste shoes made exclusively from recycled, vegan and recyclable materials. The footwear brand has 11 models in its range and sells online and through a network of 12 retailers across Europe. It also operates a recycling programme, so when Zèta sneakers are worn out or too damaged to be repaired they will take them back for free and turn them into green fuel with Gebetex.
